Gurus with Actual Jobs?

Post  slimingdown on 14th March 2011, 10:18 am

I was wondering what youtube gurus have actual jobs that have nothing to do with what they do on youtube.
So no makeup artists or stylists other beauty related jobs. I like to watch gurus who have a balance in their lives. Who make videos but also have a real life and where youtube doesn't help towards their own job and their job doesn't help with their youtube.
A lot of gurus I watch are still in school (like euchante) to become hopefully something non-youtube related but I am wondering about people who already have jobs

I know fadingdreams300 works as a drama teacher and at an animal clinic

And although not a makeup guru but I love her videos, xochristine64 is a 5th grade teacher.

I am sick of gurus who have youtube as their "job" - the sisters, queenbeeuty, etc. Yes it pays well and probably pays a lot more than an actual job but I just want to watch people with some balance in their life.

Who are the gurus YOU watch that have actual jobs and what are their jobs? I am looking to expand my list of people I watch and subscribe to.
Thanks

both! makeup and tips mostly but I just prefer people who also do vlogs and talk about other aspects of their lives...
I watch channels of talented makeup artists (love Lisa Eldridge) but for amateur makeup artists (ie girls in their bedrooms) I prefer to watch people who have a life outside of youtube so they are more relatable and down to earth.

I think that Jen (frmheadtotoe) has a job that has absolutely nothing to do with make up. At least she said something like that in some of her recent videos....

Koren from EnKore is a makeup artist. I think Elisa from Pursebuzz is one as well.
So is Lisa Eldrige-very talented MUA.
Wayne Goss aka Gossthemakeupartist also works as MUA, I think he does weddings and such.
Makeup Geek's Marlena is an MUA.
Emily Eddington aka EmilyNoel83 is a news anchor.

Well yes, I know that a lot of makeup gurus are makeup artists as a career as well, but I was looking for gurus whose job talents lie beyond the makeup and beauty field

TheBarbieWithMuscle is a personal trainer and, I think, an esthetician (spelling?).

Michelle1218 does...something.

BlushingPixie has mentioned going to work several times. I'm pretty sure she has an office job.

TheSPNation does something that he won't talk about, except he says it involves the business world.

ItsLiz89 is a student, I think in art.

I think Temptalia goes to law school?

Kragey is a graduate student and teaches.

VintageOrTacky worked at Sephora and currently free lances for MAC.

I believe PinkieCharm is on disability. I couldn't tell you, though, because I hate watching that bitch.

GregoryGorgeous has his own show now.

I'm pretty sure TheSublimeAgent has a non-cosmetic job, but I cannot remember what it is.

I have just started my own makeup channel on YouTube and obviously as I am only new I am not getting paid from YouTube or sponsors etc. and even if that is ever the case I will keep working.. The hype over the beauty gurus on YouTube will die down eventually so who would honestly be a sit at home YouTuber.. how boring?
I personally have my own freelance makeup artistry business as well as work in makeup retail for another makeup company.. So it seems that I am one of the very few 'gurus' who are actually qualified and working in this industry?!?

Emilynoel83 is a news anchor/reporter
Temptalia goes to law school, but I'm not sure if she has a job.
Brooke (the one who is friends with Josh & Leesha) is in school and works, but I can't remember where.
Amerixe has a job, but she didn't say where. She talked about getting a new line of nail polish in so I'm going to guess something like Ulta or Sally.

I agree with you - gurus like juicystar07 (her life is video making) and bubz (did you see her typical day vlog?) make me feel a little sad.

so what's a 'real job'?

Post  ima on 3rd August 2011, 9:33 am

Hope this is in the right section...

Something which seems to come up alot on this forum is the controversial matter of Youtubers making money out of what they do, subsequently leaving their so called 'real job'. Although whilst I don't necessarily agree with the practises of Elle and Blair- dropping out of school and selling bullshit to everyone, why is youtube not a supposed 'real job'?

1) Apparently it is not sustainable?
Please tell me what job is? I'd say about 90% of jobs have contracts, which all eventually come to an end or people quit, a company could go bust... How is this any different? same goes to actors, authors, artists, entrepreneurs, oh perhaps one day people shall stop watching their movies/buying their books/paintings so they should get a 9-5 office job just incase instead of putting their absolute all into their work in order to get them further.

2) it's on the internet pahaha what a joke. How rubbish will that look on a resume!

Soz kids but it's blatantly obvious that the internet is the future, the opportunities that Youtube provides to so many youtubers is pretty insane if I'm honest, and with a bit of clever wording it can look even more impressive. Take Elle and Blair ( no matter how much I hate to use them) they have their own phonecase line, have collaborated on videos with huge companies like Walmart, forever 21 and have been on good morning america, all the youtuber who have been given reporter passes as friggin E3, Comic Con, Apple conferences and have had their own movie a la Fred is going to look a lot better than '9-5 job at x office in x city' if you ask me. Especially with the careers most of them are hoping to break into (media, fashion, graphics, movies etc) it's gunna look much better.

So yeah, sorry for the rant ( I have time on my hands), but it is something that really bugs me. I'm not endorsing dropping out of High School for youtube (college is something else entirely) but giving up a mundane, 9-5 jobs like most of these guys have earning crappy money when they earn a lot more and have a lot more fun on youtube, (which if I'm totally honest, is something I envy) I don't see the problem. I guess I want to be enlightened into what is a supposedly super sustainable income and a 'real job' as such, heh.

Re: Gurus with Actual Jobs?

I have never seen sitting in front of a camera and giving bullshit reviews to a crowd of impressionable adolescent females to be attractive in the slightest. Why? Simply because it's not a fulfilling job. I personally want to eventually have a career where I can make an impact on someone's life or make a good contribution to society in some way. What do Elle and Blair and other large makeup gurus contribute besides lies and a facade of a personality? A catalyst for blind hero worship from a groveling crowd of preteen females?

Actors have the talent of being able to embody the personality and demeanor of someone else.
Authors are talented at writing, thus being able to articulate amazing thoughts and story lines.
Artists have technical genius and an eye for aesthetics that allow them to create masterpieces.
Entrepreneurs are learned in the ways of business, most of the time, or have a special, marketable skill.
Reporters have remarkable charisma, they have to have the ability to remain steadfast in conducting interviews and they must have good writing ability.

What do Elle, Blair, Michelle Phan, and Kandee have?

Well, they can swirl together colors on their faces in a rather sloppy way, build up a mountain of lies and promptly sit on the top with a hot-pink seat cushion, and look "pretty" on camera.

I respect skill, perseverance, and talent, not luck.
