Some helpful links (How to screenshot, archive, and investigate!)

Post  RJBMama on 2nd March 2011, 4:47 am

OH HI! CONSIDERING MOST BRAINS HAVE SHUT OFF BEFORE THE FIRST SENTENCE, I AM WRITING THIS HERE IN BIG, CAPATALIZED LETTERS TO LET THOSE OF YOU KNOW THAT EVERYONE CAN USE THESE LINKS TO NOT ONLY DISCOVER GURU LIES, BUT DEFEND THEM. IF THE EVIDENCE IS THERE, THESE SITES WILL HELP YOU FIND IT.

I've devised some links to help everyone out. If someone asks how to do any of the following in a thread, please link them here so they may learn!

HOW TO TAKE A SCREENSHOT

With a Mac
With Windows
With Linux

HOW TO ARCHIVE GURU FLUBS AND VIEW PAST ARCHIVES

"Archiving" is where you get a logging system to send a bot to the page you are visiting to screenshot the site and create an archived image. This keeps an online log that can never be erased by someone. The more you use and archiving source, the more the page will be crawled, thus creating a log of what is and isn't put online.

This is VERY useful for Gurus that delete various entries after being called out. Best part? The links I provide have a built-in AdBlock that will allow you to not only surf and record, but also not risk giving any more money out.

WayBack Machine

To use, simply put the website in the search bar. It will come up with a calender. Previously crawled entries will be in blue. From those pages, simply click on links to add to the archival. While we can't resurrect stuff that hasn't been archived in the past, you can add for future use.

Another site that archives website pages is BackupURL. It saves an archived image much like WayBack Machine, but gives you a separate link that you can share. You can even backup cached images. HOWEVER, Facebook pages and YouTube videos cannot be archived.

HOW TO CHECK A PICTURE SOURCE

This site will allow you to search for the original source of an image. Maybe a guru is claiming to have done makeup in a certain picture that you know you've seen before, it's possible that this can find the source.

TinEye

The database is small because it is still in beta, at the moment, but the more you add, the more is there for later.

HOW TO SAVE A VIDEO

There are several available websites that allow you to save YouTube videos.
http://www.savetube.com/
http://saveyoutube.com/
http://keepvid.com/

*These sites are for you to save videos for your personal use and we do not condone reposting the videos, as they hold copyrights.*

**I will try and add more as I come across useful sites. Please leave some recommendations to other directions for future members.

Actually if you use Google Chrome, life for screen shots become a heck of a lot easier. Just get this extension on your chrome called "Screen Capture" and you can edit everything on the browser.

What type of HP?
Usually all laptops have a PrtSc button right next to F12.

I took a screen shot of something and tried to upload it, and it wouldn't let me. It said it needed to be 0 mb or less... and then I made it super small and it still wouldn't upload.

:/

Being new here, I was quite struck by that as well. (actually it's what prompted me to check out the thread, curiosity and all, being what it is...)
A bit of a provocative and loaded word, but in reality not much different than "research". It does all seem a bit much but if that's your thing, best to have the goods (so to speak) to back up your position.

This is great !!

I too knew how to screen shot, but will look into working the new tools.

@ Nataly and abc
Get a clue.
If it wasn't for the persistence of people here or the disenchanted internet community at large, we would have never needed the FTC to create a LAW to keep so-called gurus HONEST.

If you actually took the time to read and follow the links, you would see that these are completely commonly used websites. There is not one site listed that offers an intrusion of privacy, but rather a way to provide more evidence. Who's to say people that are defending these gurus can't use them, as well?
You are all so quick to judge and behave so harshly, but in a rather lazy way. What I have listed above can help BOTH sides of the story and yet people attack like blind junkyard dogs.

I've changed the title of this thread to prevent future ridicule based on one simple word because it is apparent that it's painstaking to actually read anything for yourselves.

Hey

I just wanted to share a great wee program I use for screen shots (before I used to use just the print screen method)

It is called "Jing" by techsmith http://www.techsmith.com/jing.html

It is very easy to use and saves the file straight after you capture it. You do not need to worry about cropping or editing later as you select the bits you want to capture first.

I've never had problems with it and I use the free version

Hope it helps

i'm sorry i didn't know where else to post this

I wanted to know if this thing is only happening to me. It's been two weeks that the same old videos keep showing up on the "how to & style" section and its very annoying 'cause I can't get to see what people are recently uploading...does anybody know how to fix this(it also happens when I sign in too)
