Selling makeup?

Post  phandango on 18th January 2011, 8:17 am

Please don't hate on me because I know that some people are squeamish about this sort of thing... BUT I personally have been collecting makeup for a long time and this year, I resolved that I would only keep the stuff I absolutely need or else only the stuff that actually looks good on me. Thus, I've ended up with tons of UNUSED makeup, stuff I only swatched once or twice, stuff I used one time and then put away. SO, I am wondering, and I don't even know if this will get taken down, but is there any place you guys know of where I can sell this stuff at VERY reasonable prices? I have everything from MAC to Bobbi Brown, Shu Uemura, Urban Decay, La Mer, Chanel, Armani, Cargo, etc... lots and lots of good stuff. Some high end skin care stuff that hasn't been opened as well from Paul & Joe, MAC, Korres.

I swapped on Makeupalley for about a year and got scammed 4 or 5 times out of really nice things. Plus, it doesn't help much because you end up getting something else in return for something you swap away. Thus, the amount of makeup never really diminishes...

I've also given away a lot of unopened makeup to a local charity. I would feel bad swapping/donating/selling makeup that is old/gross/used more than once, etc. But I still have a lot and these charities end up with a lot of stuff that remains unused.

I haven't purchased new makeup in over a month. It's a habit I fully intend to break!

Have a blog sale. Gurus do it all the time and they sell all sorts of nasty crap but people buy it anyway. Just ask someone out of the nicer gurus to link your sale on their twitter or something. Don't charge too much and make sure you sanitize everything before you send it out.

I have the same problem but I haven't tried swapping yet.

I wouldn't suggest a blog sale. Gurus can get away with it because they have so many young girls that idolize them and they will buy whatever they can to get a piece of them. You could try eBay, but clearly note in the title that is is used. It might not sell immediately, but I think most items will eventually sell overtime.

You can only sell 100% new and still in box cosmetics on Ebay. If you try to sell used, they will pull your listing. I agree that blog sale is the best way to go. If you still have a MUA account with good feedback, that can help your credibility. I think there should be a section on this website where people can buy used cosmetics too. Lots of people want access to discounted cosmetics, even if they are previously owned.

Sorry, I didn't know ebay disallowed used makeup. I've seen used makeup there, so I thought it would be okay. Maybe you could hold a blog sale here, if the mods allow it.

I've bought and sold things on MakeupGeek before, never had a problem. It's a pretty good community there...

Thank you so much. I didn't know there was a community on MakeupGeek! I will definitely check it out.

Yeah I have thought about selling my MAC fix+ Rose (2) and my Paul and Joe serum and extra MAC Feline and extra Chanel Stunt on Ebay since they are kind of rare and new in box. But I do believe the rules about selling used/swatched makeup on Ebay are pretty strict now. I would try, but I don't want my account to be banned or something Neutral

I would do a blog sale but I don't have a blog... maybe if MakeupGeek doesn't work, I could make a blog page just for that? I have a TON of stuff to sell, unfortunately. Sometimes I see gurus linking to other people's blog sales too. Fuzkittie linked to one on her Facebook today as well. I totally agree... I wish we had something like that here as well. Maybe the mods would consider it? I am sure a lot of people on here could benefit from it =)

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone =)

There's also livejournal communities where it's pretty much commonplace to have sales; I personally have sold a couple of times. My fave:

Oh and people are also constantly selling on Spektra. I've purchased a couple of times with no problems at all and they have an internal ratings system which is great so you'll know which buyers/sellers are credible.

Well, if you do make a blog to have a sale, put it up on here so we can go to it!

Oh, I didn't know if you guys would be interested or if that was allowed on here! I am going to work on it over the weekend and then I will make sure to post it here as well along with my Ebay and MUA feedback to prove I'm legit =)

Thank you for the suggestions, I will check these out as well!
